What should I look out for?

Whether you have found a private stem cell clinic in Australia or overseas, here are some things to consider.

Signs a treatment may not be legitimate

It can be hard to determine if what's on offer is legitimate. Keep in mind the following warning signs when doing your research:

  • When an experimental treatment is not part of a registered clinical trial and you are asked to pay
  • When there is no Medicare or private insurance rebate for the procedure
  • Where the same stem cell treatment is claimed to help patients suffering a range of different diseases
  • Where patient testimonials and endorsements are used as evidence
  • When it is claimed that there are no risks involved
  • Where the treatments are being advertised directly to you via TV, radio, online or in newspaper articles, rather than from your doctor

What questions should I ask?

Whether you are considering a treatment in Australia or abroad, it is great to ask lots of questions.

We have developed a checklist of questions to help you work out what’s on offer by the stem cell clinic and if it is right for you. We also have a list of questions to ask your Australian GP or specialist as they are best placed to help you make sense of your research.
